The Mutilations Continue

24.04.09

A greyhound has been found mutilated, covered in blood and mud on a grass verge in Bedlington, Northumberland – less than three miles from Cambois dog track. His ears had been hacked off with a sharp implement and had electricians tape on his legs and back.

Staff at the vets where he is now recovering have named him 'Dougie' and he is the third greyhound in as many months to be mutilated in such a fashion - sadly he was the only one to survive such an attack.

The RSPCA have launched an investigation and are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward to help identify those responsible in what RSPCA Inspector Ian Smith has described as a “sickening act of cruelty”

"It is clear this dog's ears have been removed by a sharp implement, which must have caused him unimaginable pain and distress. Thankfully he was rescued early and taken to safety, else he easily could have died".

Although Dougie’s ears - cruelly stamped with identifying tattoos at the tender age of 10 weeks - have now been cut off, it is still possible to identify him through DNA sampling – if he was bred in Ireland.

Please watch the news report below and wonder how this gentle, passive and obliging breed can sustain such torture yet continue to be so forgiving.

PETA Offers GBP 1,000 To Help Find Valentina's Killer

PETA Press Release:

Yate, Bristol - In what is believed to have been a horrific act of cruelty, a greyhound who was heavily pregnant with six puppies was apparently killed and dumped on wasteland in the village of Iron Acton near Yate recently. She was found on 14 February. Her ears had apparently been cut off in order to prevent the authorities from using her identification tattoos to trace the culprit.

PETA is offering a reward of up to £1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this horrific crime.

This disturbing incident follows reports about a spate of cruel attacks in the area, including two cat shootings and the killing of another dog who was also dumped. Bristol residents have good reason to be concerned about cruelty-to-animals cases such as these.

There is ample evidence that serial rapists and murderers often have histories of past incidents involving cruelty to animals. Child-killers Mary Bell, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables as well as serial murderers Ian Huntley, Thomas Hamilton (Dunblane massacre), Fred West, Denis Nilsen, Ian Brady and Jeffrey Dahmer all started out by deliberately harming animals.

PETA is urging residents to keep a watchful eye on their animal companions and to keep them indoors. Because animals cannot report their own abuse and can do little to fight back, they are the perfect "practice" victims for those who tend towards violence.

"Animal abusers are cowards", says PETA spokesperson Suzanne Barnard. "They take their issues out on the most defenceless beings available to them."

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.

Eight Minutes of Motivation

13.04.09

Please watch this inspiring video which highlights how Grey2k USA tirelessly educate America in the inherent cruelty of greyhound racing and last year won a massive victory in the state of Massachusetts to have this so called 'sport' banned. The video is proof - beyond doubt - a ban on greyhound racing will be achieved in the UK.

Trainer Jailed for Drug Offences

13.04.09

A former ‘professional’ greyhound trainer attached to Newcastle stadium, has been jailed for 10 years for supplying cocaine and amphetamine - the second trainer in just over 6 months to be imprisoned for drug offences.

An article in the local press covering the court proceedings, reported Brian Stirling as a ‘respected greyhound racer’ – this is wholly inaccurate  and far from the truth.

07.04.09

March has been a dreadful month for greyhounds – you only have to read the catalogue of abuse, neglect, mutilation and murder reported last month to realise greyhounds need our voices more than ever.

As a very small thank you to all supporters who have taken the time to respond to appeals and email various  organisations, we would like to share with you a beautiful video - a small reminder to us all of what we are trying to achieve.

These are the graceful and passive creatures who we seek justice and speak compassionately for.

Sit back, relax and enjoy..........

Thanks to JacksHounds for this inspiring and heartwarming video and of course many thanks to all those who have contributed – no matter how small – to the campaign.

GRB - Greyhound Regulatory Board

06.04.09

We are now in our fourth month of 2009 and not surprisingly the industry's promoters of the new Greyhound Board of Great Britain have enjoyed a fully functional website since the beginning of January.

However, the GBGB have ignored repeated requests from Greyt Exploitations for a date when the regulator's website will be published and have also refused to  confirm  any disciplinary hearings which may or may not have been held since autumn 2008.

Since the GBGB's conception, there has been nothing to suggest the industry intends to become more transparent and accountable. Declan Donnelly - Director of Regulation -  has already questioned the need for some disciplinary hearings, stating "Naturally, those of a more serious nature should and will be bought before the Disciplinary Committee but we should ask the question whether all hearings are necessary. If we can establish clearly defined punishments and penalties for levels of offence, then some of the former hearings would not be deemed necessary to sit before the committee".

Until such a time as the regulator's website is published or we receive a reply from the GBGB, we are unable to update the 'new' structure of the racing industry.

Is this the lack of transparency we can now expect from the industry's regulators - the new Greyhound Regulatory Board?
